McIntosh: legendary sound for amplifiers, speakers and beyond

The epitome of everything the highest quality audio should be. Amplifiers, Integrated Amplifiers, Preamplifiers, Acoustic Speakers, Turntables and other equipment designed and engineered with craftsmanship, care and passion. For more than 70 years, the Binghamton, N.Y.-based company has been accompanying musicians and enthusiasts with a range of products that have made history.
It all began in 1946, when designers Frank McIntosh and Gordon Gow joined forces to create a high-power, low-distortion amplifier. This led to the 50W-1 model, which included the first patented circuit, theUnity Coupled Circuit, still used today.
Taking advantage of the great popularity that radio gained during World War II, the company's products began to be noticed by home audio enthusiasts. The 1950s were the years of the A116 and MC30 amplifiers, but also of the first AM-FM tuner, the MR55. The public, however, wanted something more. The arrival of high-fidelity recordings prompted the brand to renew its range.

A myth that is renewed, from Woodstock to the Wall of Sound

In 1962, Dave O'Brien joined the company, and it was the beginning of a period of great innovation. It was at this point that the iconic look that amplifiers and preamplifiers, among others, would adopt in later years was conceived. The logo was printed with a special ink and screen-printed. This eliminated the possibility that the letters might be damaged or, even, disappear after some time.
The first, major manifestation of the greatness of the New York-based business's products would come shortly thereafter. In 1969, its amplifiers were used at Woodstock, the temple of free music.
The 1970s and 1980s brought new types of products, such as floorstanding and bookshelf speakers.
During this period the company entered the myth thanks to two events. The first is the inclusion of the power meter on a blue background. The second is the collaboration with the Grateful Dead, which led to the creation of the legendary Wall of Sound in 1974.

Vintage audio always relevant

The 1990s and 2000s coincided with expansion into new markets. In 1994, the first line of car products was developed, which led in the following decade to partnerships with Harley Davidson, Subaru, and Ford.
The most recent generations of products skillfully mix nostalgia and advanced technologies, analog and digital. And it is in this mixture of past and future that the business is able to find new momentum. Sponsorship of events dedicated to the world of rock is accompanied by the birth of the first digital and wireless products, such as the RS 100 active bass reflex loudspeaker.
The company does not give up the distinctive look of its products. The logo, in multicolored hues, is always accompanied by the famous power meters on a blue background.
