Bowers & Wilkins, innovation and passion for speakers and loudspeakers
A symbolic brand of high fidelity, which has accompanied the evolution of the audio industry through products that have remained in history. Bowers & Wilkins (often abbreviated to B&W) has for years been synonymous with speakers and loudspeakers appreciated and known worldwide.
Today's success, however, is nothing more than the result of a story of love for music, passion for technology and a desire to amaze.
Before we sing the praises of floorstanding speakers, bookshelf speakers, and loudspeakers, thanks in part to our special feature on B&W loudspeakers, it is only fair to go back in time to the beginning of the British brand's epic.
Humble beginnings and the success of the Nautilus
When one thinks of the 1960s, one 's mind goes back to the cultural - and therefore musical - revolution that shook society. Far from it all, in the quiet coastal town of Worthing, South England, lived John Bowers. A simple dealer who, taking advantage of a legacy left to him by a customer, founded his own company.
In his workshop, he began experimenting with new audio solutions. Like the P1 loudspeaker, and the DM1 and DM3 monitors, designed for home listening and beyond.
Thus, as the Beatles raged on with albums that went down in history like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, British houses began to appreciate B&W products, increasingly taking center stage.
The successes continued unstoppably, from the 801 monitor to the DM6, the first speaker with an aramid fiber cone. It is a period of great innovation. From the "tweeter-on-top" design, still used today, to the Matrix bronze frame. Innovations that also impact aesthetics, capable of creating a distinctive profile that is immediately recognizable to fans.
Also during this period, the name Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus begins to peep out. It is the beginning of a new era, which will accompany the brand into the new millennium.
The new era, from Anniversary Editions to Zeppelin
With Nautilus, B&W revolutionizes the design process of home speakers. It is a structure capable of combining efficiency and aesthetics. An innovation that, among other things, is still relevant today, and is profitably exploited throughout the brand's catalog.
But it is not enough, because the British company continues to insist on novelties. This explains the birth of Anniversary Editions, product lines that enhance the past while looking to the future. Among them, the Bowers & Wilkins 603 and 606 ranges shine in all their power. From the B&W 603 S2 floorstanding speaker to the Bowers & Wilkins 606 S2 bookshelf speaker, the company chooses to remain true to itself while continuing its personal quest for the ideal sound.
The latest major innovation goes by the name of Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin. A wireless speaker system capable of delivering quality sound even without the use of wired connections.
